Cristiano Ronaldo’s 366th league goal of his career equalled Jimmy Greaves’ long standing record for the most goals in Europe’s top six domestic competitions (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Netherlands).
Greaves, who stopped playing at the top level in 1971, scored 357 times in the English First Division and added another nine in Italy’s Serie A during a short spell in Milan.
Greaves’ record was phenomenal, putting him comfortably ahead of other British attackers, but how does his record compare on a goals-per-game basis with Ronaldo? And Lionel Messi?
Here is the answer…
366 goals in 529 top flight games (First Division and Serie A) = 0.69 goals per game.
335 in 372 games (LaLiga) = 0.90 goals per game.
With Ronaldo still scoring freely and showing no signs of slowing down, he will go past Greaves and extend the record.
The question is, can Messi score more?
Ronaldo is now 32, while Messi is 29, so who do you think will end up scoring the most league goals when both have retired? Vote here.
